Welp, 2016 was one heck of a year. Fortunately, we made it through and already have plenty of fashionable reasons to be excited about 2017. Just look at this month’s Golden Globes red carpet: Evan Rachel Wood was celebrated for wearing a black silk Altuzarra pantsuit, while Lola Kirke walked the same stretch of rouge rug with unshaven armpits.

Sure, neither of these things are (or should be) especially groundbreaking in 2017, but they signal something promising: conformity is out, unique is in and being forward-thinking is in vogue — literally! Inspired by this injection of individuality, we decided to put together a list of our New Years style resolutions for 2017.

Less is More

It may sound strange coming from a brand, but get rid of stuff. Clothes, accessories, shoes — all of it. From the best-selling, culture shifting books like The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo to Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things on Netflix, our generation seems happiest when it has less stuff and more memories. It’s not that you have to stop shopping altogether. Rather, only buy pieces that you truly love and express who you are.

Wear Less Black

Yes, we have much to mourn from 2016: Carrie Fisher, David Bowie, George Michael, Mariah Carey’s career — the list goes on. But that doesn’t mean every day has to be a fashion funeral. So often stylish people fall into the trap of wearing all-black-everything all the time. It’s easy and frankly, it’s uncreative. Be adventurous! Branch out and celebrate colour, patterns and prints in 2017. If you need to start with gateway neutrals like beige and navy, we won’t judge.

Buy What Makes You Happy

In keeping with buying less, if you are going to shop, only take home things that make you truly happy. In fact, the right clothing can make you feel less depressed and anxious. You know that feeling: when you put on a pair of shoes or dress or shirt and you instantly feel like you could take on the world. That’s the serendipitous, magical experience you should be shopping for — not just another sweater. Don’t take out your wallet because you think something is the current hype brand or it’s a trending style. Trends are temporary and transactional; true fashion should never be forgettable.

Get Social!

Maybe your Instagram game is already on-point — in that case, please scroll on. For those of you who don’t have #OOTDs on the regular, try it out! It’s a great excuse to experiment with something fun and funky through your fashion, and share it with the world! Not only will this build your confidence, but your network. You may find yourself connecting with people who think your style is fire and vice versa! (Don’t forget if you’re posting a snap with your POP! Shoes to include the hashtag #POPShoes.)

Plan Ahead

Instead of rushing in the morning and throwing together whatever’s lying around, strategize your style the night before. This will allow you to pick items you may not necessarily wear all the time and reintegrate them into your regular wardrobe. Also, you can build looks around key new pieces you’re excited about… Like a new pair of shoes, perhaps? Wink wink, nudge nudge.
